Poseidon-Subspecies-Group
(Characteristics)
- This subspecies group, which includes 13 subspecies and 3 local forms, inhabits the main island of New Guinea and neighboring islands.
- The wing shape of ♂ has pointed FW and HW, and the color of patches is golden green.
- The ♀ shows polymorphism due to local variation as well as individual variation. In general, ssp. poseidon, which inhabits a wide range of habitats, is very complex and difficult to explain comprehensively. There are many exceptions, but in general, those in the west tend to have a darker ground color and bright and larger spots.
- There were probably three routes for the Poseidon population to spread eastward its distribution, that is, the three destinations are follows; ➀ Solomon Islands (first or northeast route), ➁ Woodlark Is. (second or southeast route) and ➂ Louisiade I. (third or the most southeast route). Three subspecies involved in the first route were treated as a separate species group, the Eastern-Subspecies-Group.
