10. Ssp. kasandra Kobayashi, 199427) [♂, ♀]
(Distribution) [Map 20]
INDONESIA [Irian Jaya] Yapen Is.
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
Described by Kobayashi in 1994 as a new subspecies of sp. priamus based on 15 ♂♂, 16♀♀. The holotype is a female. The subspecies named after Kasandra, daughter of Poseidon, a King of Troy (Greek Mythology).
(Characteristics)
It is quite different from ssp. teucrus, which occurs just north of this subspecies, and is rather like to ssp. poseidon from the mainland of New Guinea. Both sexes have stable maculae.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: Many individual variations. On the FW, the median stripe is distinctly present. The HW, unlike those of ssp. teucrus, tend to lack the subcostal golden spot, and the subcostal space is somewhat scattered with black scales. The black discal spots in spaces 5 and 6 may be small or moderate.
♀: The ground color ranges from blackish brown to slightly light blackish brown. On the FW, the cell-spot ranges large to absent, and the other pale spots are shaded brown. The pale discal spots on the HW are narrow and often widely separated from each other.
(Variation)
No specific variations have been reported so far, but it is considered that variations similar to those of ssp. poseidon exist.
