(Distribution) [Map 11]
AUSTRALIA [Queensland] Cape York Peninsula (Iron Range Nat. Park, Lloyd Bay area, Claudie River basin, MacIlwraith Range (Coen), Silver Plains, Port Stewart.
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
It was described as a new subspecies based on specimens of 46♂♂, 50♀♀from the Australian Museum. Much of these materials are summarized under O. priamus pronomus by Monteith (1972). The holotype is a ♂ collected by A. & J. d’Apice on May 24, 1974 in the Claudie River area. This subspecies is named after Dr. D. K. McAlpine, Curator of Insect and Arachnides, Australian Museum.
(Characteristics)
One of the four subspecies in the Australian Continent. This is a small to medium-sized subspecies and resembles both ssp. pronomus, which is distributed about 200 Km to the north and ssp. euphorion, which is distributed about 240 Km to the south, so some researchers consider it a natural hybrid of the two (Deslisle & Sclavo, 201510)).
(Spotted pattern)
♂: Wing shape is rounded. The median stripe on FW is absent or insignificant. The anal band is narrow, and the submarginal band is slightly wavy. The black discal spots on HW are round, moderate in size, and 4 or 5 are present.
♀: Wing shape is rounded. Spots on FW are all arranged and bright white with a little dark scaling. The pale discal spot on HW sagittate inwards. Dark discal spots are moderate in size and isolated each other.
