This genus includes seven species that distributed on the main island of New Guinea and other neighboring islands.

- O. rothschildi Kenrick, 1911 (1 subspecies)
- O. goliath Oberthür, 1888 (8 subspecies, 1 subspecies (?))
Each of these species has a variety of characteristics, so they can be divided into following three groups according to their characteristics: Paradisea-Species-Group, Tithonus-Species-Group and Goliath-Species-Group. The following characteristics are common to all of them.
- FW surface pattern of ♂ consists of the radial, the cubital and the anal bands, is iridescent golden green to yellowish green, and is characteristic by lack of the sex-brand.
- Semi-translucent golden spots on ♂ HW are the largest in Genus Ornithoptera, and the inner margins are densely covered with long, creamy-white to light brown hairs.
- The pattern on ♀ is basically the same as those of Subgenus Ornithoptera, but the ground color is darker, the spots are whiter and brighter (contrasted (=dark) form). The veins of the pale band on HW are often obscured because being covered with white scales. The dark discal spots are reduced and rounded, and are slightly deviated to the cell side.
