4. Ssp. sorongensis Morita & Sugiyama, 1998¹⁴⁾ [♂, ♀]

(Episodes of discovery and original description)

This new subspecies was described in 1998 by Mr. Morita and Mr. Sugiyama on the basis of 10 ♂♂, 7♀♀collected at Sorong, the westernmost part of the Doberai Peninsula in Irian Jaya. Another ssp. atlas occurs on the Onin Peninsula, just south of O. goliath sorongensis is the distribution. The ssp. sorongensis is named after its habitat.

(Characteristics)

A lowland subspecies. Considering their close distribution ranges and the fact that they are also lowland inhabitants, it could be considered that it is the same subspecies as ssp. atlas.

(Spotted pattern)

♂: No clear distinction can be made from the lowland ssp. atlas.

♀: All FW spots are present, and it is characterized by especially large subapical streaks.  On HW, the outer area of dark discal spots is ochre, while the basal area is white covering with black scales. The abdomen is gray, while lateral and undersurface of it are yellow color. As a lowland subspecies, there is no body hairs that is characteristic of the highland subspecies.
