Paradisea-Species-Group
This species group includes the following species:
1) O. (S.) arfakensis (Joicey & Noakes, 1916) (3 subspecies, 1 subspecies (?), 2 local forms (?))
2) O. (S.) paradisea Staudinger, 1893 (6 subspecies, 1 subspecies (?), 2 local forms (?))
3) O. (S.) meridionalis (Rothschild, 1897) (1 subspecies)
The most peculiar features of these three species are that HW is small and triangular, with the V2nd extending to form a tail, and absence of the black discal spots. Moreover, the presence of variable dorsal abdominal pattern (simplex or complex) is also characteristic.
Recently, individuals of the same type as ssp. occidentalis and the nominotypical ssp. arfakensis were found, respectively from Batanta Island. Since it is unlikely that two subspecies of the same species exist on such a small island, so if this is reliable, we believe ssp. occidentalis should be an independent species. Unfortunately, I think it is premature to draw any conclusions at this point, but it will certainly be an issue for future classification.
