(Episodes of discovery and original description)

Based on 1♂, 2♀♀(holotype is a female), it was described as a new subspecies of sp. paradisea by Sugiyama in 2000. The subspecies name “galatea” is derived from the Sea Fairy Galatea, which means fair-skinned female, hence the name for the white patches on the female of this subspecies.

(Characteristics)

The number of known specimens as of 2021 is likely to be less than 10.

(Spotted pattern)

♂: Slightly smaller, difficult to distinguish from ssp. arfakensis except for the intensely green macula. The inside of basal area of the tail is black. Femur slightly yellow.

♀: Resembles ssp. arfakensis, but the wing spots are whiter, and HW pale band is more extended closer to the wing base. Dark marginal border is much broader. Femur is slightly yellow.
