3. Ssp. occidentalis Morita & Takenaka, 19989) [♂, ♀]
(Distribution) [Map 31]
INDONESIA [Irian Jaya] Doberai Peninsula (Sorong, Katimin II), Waigeo Is., Batanta Is.
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
A new subspecies with a peculiarly spotted female was described by Morita & Takenaka in the same year based on 12 pairs of specimens collected in August 1998 at Sorong, the westernmost part of Irian Jaya. The subspecies name, occidentalis, “westward” in Latin, was probably named after the collection locality.
(Characteristics)
The peculiar spots of the female are very different from those of any other species and are easily identified.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: Sightly smaller, with rounded tornus of FW and HW. The radial band is the widest subapically of all subspecies and is not as yellowish as nominotypical ssp. arfakensis. Femur slightly yellow.
♀: The ground color of the wings is deep black, the white spots on FW are significantly reduced. The cell-spot and the discal spots are present, but the subapical streaks and the submarginal spots may be absent in some individuals. HW cell-spot is pure white, and the dark discal spots are large and fused with the outer marginal border.
(Variation)
♂-f. rumbucheri Dufek & Schäffler, 20065): [Aberration FW pattern] Semi-translucent golden spots on the apex of the radial band (within spaces 6 and 8). The same aberration is rare except in O. tithonus, which is normal pattern, but have been reported in O. c. chimaera ♂-f. aureosedulum and O. goliath ukihidei ♂-f. eduardei.
