With the independence of O. (S.) arfakensis, O. (S.) paradisea, excluding it, is classified into 7 ssp. including 2 local forms. However, there are still many areas that lack the necessary specimens for accurate classification. This species inhabits the tropical rainforests of medium- and low-lands of New Guinea, and is distributed mainly in the north, separating it from another species, O. (S.) meridionalis, which inhabit the south. This species, together with O. (S.) arfakensis, is characterized by the presence of a tapering graceful tail on HW of the ♂.
