(Episodes of discovery and original description)
The specimens for the original description were collected in September (1♂) and December (1♂ and 2♀♀) 1977 and January (1♂), May (1♀) and July (2♀♀) 1978, thus 6♀♀ and 2♂♂ in total. The subspecies name “chrysanthemum” is derived from “chrysanthemum ornatum var. spontaneum f. flavescens”, which is originally from Himeji City (where Heiichi Kobayashi, one of the original authors, lives).
(Characteristics)
Good approximation to ssp. flavescens, possibly the same subspecies.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: No definite distinguishing characters from the nominotypical ssp. paradisea can be found. Femur yellow.
♀: Wing color black. HW pale band bright yellow, very similar to ssp. flavescens, but FW with only subapical streaks, submarginal spots, and a discal spot in space 2, usually absent or minute cell-spot and the other discal spots. Femur yellow.
(Variation)
♀-f. ornatum Schäffler, 200114): [Aberrant FW pattern] All the spots are enlarged, and cell-spot and discal spots also appears. (Very similar to ssp. flavescens.)

The number of specimens and the data on which this local form is based are not given, but the name of this local form is attributed to Mrs. Sabine, the spouse of Mr. Zöller, the owner of these type specimens.
(Characteristics)
It differs from ssp. chrysanthemum only in that the inner side of HW pale band of ♀ are white instead of yellow.

♂: No distinguishing characters from ssp. chrysanthemum can be found. Femur yellow.
♀: The described specimen is the same as ssp. chrysanthemum, but the inner side of the pale band on HW is whitish instead of yellow. Femur yellow. (individual variation?)

It was described as a new subspecies of O. (S.) paradisea in 2006 by Dufek & Schäffler based on4♂♂ specimens collected in the northeastern Wandammen Mountains between September 2001 and April 2006. The subspecies is named after Mr. Vickson Kotaseao, PNG.
(Characteristics)
It was described as a subspecies with only 4 ♂♂.
(Spotted Pattern)
♂: it is characterized by its rounded apex of FW, broad black maculae on the underside of FW and almost entirely black tail. unknown.
♀: (Author’ collection) Very similar to ssp. chrysanthemum, but a small white spot on the cell of FW.
