(Episodes of discovery and original description)
Haugum & Low (1979) mentioned in their Monograph 1 (3) that O. paradisea was present in Otakwa River-Snow Range, but useful specimens were scarce. Schäffler described it as ssp. detanii based on 9 ♂♂ and 13♀♀specimens rediscovered at Timika, near the lower reaches of the Otakwa River in 1996. The subspecies is named after Mr. Hiromi Detani, a well-known butterfly researcher living in Bali.
(Characteristics)
There are two types – lowland and highland, but no significant differences can be found.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: There is no specific characters of this subspecies. Femur yellow.
♀: Wing ground color is dark blackish brown. On the FW, cell-spot is moderately large, and the subapical streaks are short; the submarginal spots minute and the discal spots absent except for a small spot in space 2. The submarginal area of HW pale band covered with brown scales. Femur yellow.
(Variation)
The following variations are known.
♂-f. bankoi Deslisle & Sclavo, 20121): [Aberrant FW pattern] The radial band broader past cell apex, the cubital band greatly extended, partially invading cell, consequently, black median area greatly reduced.
♂-f. nigrumpunctata Deslisle & Sclavo, 20121): [Aberrant HW pattern] Unusual presence of two small discal black spots within spaces 5 and 6, on HW underside.
♂-f. hancocki Deslisle & Sclavo, 20152): [FW discoloration] The radial band almost turquoise, especially subapically and subcostally.
♂-f. noirae Dufek & Schäffler, 20063): [FW discoloration] The cubital band is darkly covered with black scales.
♀-f. noctis Dufek & Schäffler, 20063): [Melanotype] Both FW and HW spots are markedly reduced. FW with only three small subapical streaks and HW pale band also greatly reduced.
