(Episodes of discovery and original description)

Subspecies prominens (1 pair) and ssp. misresiana (3♀♀) are listed in the same paper, and ssp. prominens being first. Ssp. prominens was collected at Lake Anggi (♂) and Mt. Momi (4000 ft.), where female is designated as the holotype. According to Haugum & Low (19779), Mt. Momi is located on the Bomberai Peninsula, the locality of the nominotypical ssp., and thus ssp. prominens is a synonym of it. Thus, the ssp. misresiana becomes valid. If the holotype of ssp. prominens had been designated as male, the subspecies name would have been reversed.

(Characteristics)

Best known subspecies and the most abundant specimen of all subspecies exist. Highland subspecies as well as ssp. dominici. Occurs in high populations.

(Spotted pattern)

♂: difficult to distinguish from other subspecies, except for ssp. cytherea, in view of various individual aberrations.

♀: The size and number of FW spots vary among individuals, but the veins of HW pale band are clearly visible due to border along the vein by black scales. This may be unique to highland species.

(Variation)

Many variations are known.

♂-f. ichwani Kobayashi & Koiwaya, 1980¹¹⁾: [Aberrant FW/HW pattern] Both FW and HW are broad. Radial band on FW is narrower, golden spots on HW are enlarger.

♂-f. gaucheti Deslisle & Sclavo, 2008⁶⁾: [Aberrant FW/HW pattern] A red patch is juxtaposed subapically to the semi-translucent golden spot within space 7 of radial band on FW. Others present subapically within the cell and basally in spaces 3 and 4, on HW.

♂-f. crepusculum Parrott & Deslisle, 1986¹⁴⁾: [Aberrant FW/HW pattern, Melanic form] Iridescent areas of FW are greatly reduced on upper- and underside and replaced by ordinary black scales. HW with large black discal spots, upper three of which are entirely fused with the black outer margin. Additional black spots are present in the tip of the cell, spaces 3 and 4, and moreover space 2 is black.

♂-f. labbei Deslisle & Sclavo, 2015⁷⁾: [Aberrant FW/HW pattern] Similar to ♂-f. crepusculum, except that the color of the iridescent bands on FW is not green but orange subapically and medianly and that all semi-translucent golden patches on HW are extended, especially the cell, as well in spaces 2 to 4. But additional black spots in spaces 3 and 4 are absent.

♂-f. deslislei Sclavo, 2008⁶⁾: [Aberrant FW pattern] Enormously expanded radial and cubital bands are connected subapically and basally.

♂-f. sanguismaculata Deslisle & Sclavo, 2015⁷⁾: [Aberrant FW pattern] Subapical and discal area distally colored by blood-red scales on FW upper and under surfaces.

♂-f. lowi Haugum, 1979⁹⁾: [Aberrant FW pattern] An additional number of golden scales is present within the cell and the cubital band on FW, where densely concentrated into distinctly semi-translucent patches.

♂-f. jeannoti Deslisle & Sclavo, 2015⁷⁾: [Aberrant HW pattern] Two atypical black patches are present within cell subapically and space 4 discally. (➡tithonus )

♂-f. nagypalis Deslisle & Sclavo, 2015⁷⁾: [Aberrant HW pattern] Extended semi-trans-lucent golden patches on HW; submarginally from space 5 to costal space, and in space 4, where it is finely prolonged along adjacent vein 5 and become comma-shape. Except for a vestigial one in costal space, black discal spots are missing.

♂-f. aurata Schäffler, 2001¹⁷⁾: [FW/HW discoloration] Iridescent green area and semi-translucent golden patches are orange instead of typical color tone.

♀-f. minima Haugum & Low, 1979⁹⁾: [Dwarf type] Small sized. With a narrow FW and elongate HW, it resembles the ssp. waigeuensis.

♀-f. rubicunda Parrott & Deslisle, 1986¹⁴⁾: [HW discoloration] Red scaling is present within the submarginal area of HW pale band.

♀-f. citreum Deslisle & Sclavo, 2015⁷⁾: [HW discoloration] The color of submarginal area of HW is lemon-yellow, diffuse discally.

♀-f. josetteae Deslisle & Scavo, 2015⁷⁾: [HW discoloration] The subapical & submarginal areas strongly yellow, on HW.
