2. *Ssp. waigeuensis (Rothschild, 1897)15) [♂, ♀]
(Distribution)
INDONESIA [Irian Jaya] Waigeo Is.
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
It was first named and described by Rothschild (1897), but 12 years earlier, in 1885, Oberthür reported a ♀ from Waigeo Island as the first ♀ of the original subspecies.
Rothschild (1895), who assumed that De Haan’s holotype (1♂ collected by S. Müller at a supposed Kapaur locality in southwestern New Guinea) was probably collected on Waigeo Island, published in “Revision” (1895), who described 2♂♂4♀♀ from Waigeo Island as the original subspecies. However, he later obtained 1♂ and 2♀♀ collected by W. Doherty at a locality that seemed to be near the collection site of De Haan’s holotype, and especially because the ♀ spots were quite different from those of the original subspecies, he designated specimens from Waigeo Island as a new subspecies and redescribed it in 1897. The subspecies is named after its habitat on Waigeo Island.
(Characteristics)
Only a few specimens are known to exist. Females are characterized by large white spots on
the FW.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: HW with large semi-translucent golden sports, especially those of space 3 and 4.
♀: All pale spots (the cell-spot, the subapical stripes, the discal spots and the submarginal
spots) on FW appear and are large. In particular, the cell-spot of FW is characterized by its
quadrilateral shape.
(Variation)
♂-f. simoni Deslisle & Sclavo, 20157): [Particular aberration] The radial and the cubital bands considerably extended and connected. Both semi-translucent golden spots in the radial band (spaces 7, 6) are twice as large as normal size. Brownish scales covering discal area in every space. On HW, semi-translucent golden scales largely prominent and a black discal spot only present within the subcostal space.
