(Episodes of discovery and original description)
The subspecies antiopa described as a subspecies from the Moluccas Islands (often described as antiope after Jordan, but this is incorrect) was described by Rothschild (1908) based on 6♂♂ collected by Dumas at Mira, Morotai, November 1898. The ♀ was subsequently collected by Jurriaanse and Lindemans in 1917. The name “antiopa” is a reference to Antiopa (= Antiope), queen of Lycus, king of the Thebae.
(Characteristics)
This subspecies is smaller than the nominotypical subspecies from Southern Maluku Islands, and can be identified by the following points.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: FW vein-stripes are slightly broader, on HW the yellow of the spots is paler. On HW underside, white streak on apex of the subcostal space is obscurely present. (Nominotypical ssp. distinct).
♀: Resembles ssp. cellularis. Vein stripes on FW are broad on both sides. On the HW, discal spots of spaces 3 and 2 elongate and reach the cell and form a small white cell-spot. The yellow color of spots is limited from subcostal space to space 3 (very pale) and is paler than other subspecies.
