2. Ssp. sulaensis (Staudinger, 189513)) [♂, ♀]
= remus, (Wallace, 1865)14) (nec Fabricius, 1777) (Sulla Is. (sic ))
(Distribution) [Map 72]
INDONESIA [Maluku] Sula Islands (Taliabu Is., Mangole Is., Sanana Is.)
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
The first report on T. hypolitus in Sula Islands was by Wallace (1865). In his paper he lumped that “differs only in having more yellow towards the anal angle of the lower wings.” Later, Staudinger (1895), based on numerous specimens collected by Dr. Platen on Mangole Island, described them as Var. Sulaensis because of the pronounced yellow of fore and hind wings.
(Characteristics)
Even though this subspecies is found only in Sula Islands, which is situated roughly in the center of distribution district of this species, there are no bridging features with other subspecies. This is a peculiar subspecies with slight blackened and yellowish wings and abdomen.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: The ground color of FW is darker than other subspecies. Semi-translucent vein-stripes are slightly reduced and tinged with yellow on surface. The semi-translucent yellow spots on submarginal area of HW are dark yellow. On the underside, a tinge of yellow appears along vein-stripes. A white stripe on the distal end of subcostal space is absent. Abdomen is yellow on both dorsal and ventral sides.
♀: As in ♂, the ground color of the wings is darker, and vein-stripes of FW are somewhat narrower, shorter, and indistinct, with yellowish tinge from the cell to the wing apex. HW pale band are entirely yellow on surface, except for some on inner marginal area. On the HW underside, there is a circular patch of white scales that are not on the cell apex of the surface. The entire abdomen is yellow.
