[2] Subgenus Troides Hübner, 181920)
This Subgenus contains of 19 species of small to medium-sized swallowtail butterflies with black FW and golden yellow or yellow HW. Because of the large number of species, the distribution range is extensive, from India to Southeast Asia and Sunda Archipelago to New Guinea in the west and from southwestern China and Taiwan to Maluku (=Molucca) Islands via Philippines and Sulawesi in the east. These species can be classified based on proximity into four Species-Groups: Amphrysus-Species-Group (4 species), Haliphron-Species-Group (7 species), Helena-Species-Group (2 species) and Aeacus-Species-Group (6 species). The common features of the four Species-Groups are listed below.
- Wing pattern of both sexes are alike to some extent.
- Ground color is glossy black, without sex-brands in ♂ and is blackish brown or dark brown in ♀. Both sexes have somewhat vein-stripes. HWs have large semi-translucent golden patches in ♂ and large yellow patches with dark discal spots in ♀, almost identical on upper and undersides.
- HW inner margin of ♂ is folded up, and brownish white odoriferous substance contained in the scent-pouch.
- Sex-brand is present on the dorsum of abdomen of ♂. The dorsum of abdomen of ♀ is pale yellowish brown, and ventral side is yellow.
