(Patterns)
♂: FW is glossy black with yellow or gray vein-stripes from the apex of the cell to subapical region and short same-colored submarginal stripes. In Kalimantan (=Bornean) subspecies (kuris, perintis, chrysomelas, actinotia, hilbert, kecilensis and flavicollis) the color of the vein-stripes changes from yellow to gray toward outside. HW is rounded and is dominated by the great expanse of bright semi-translucent golden yellowish scales, bordered by narrow black marginal border and rounded black projections, which are larger in the insular subspecies of Sumatran lineage (simeuluensis, astrea, niasicus and vistara), but are smaller in certain Kalimantan (=Bornean) subspecies (flavicollis, actinotia, hilbert and kecilensis). Underside is not so different from the upper side but is less shining and vein-stripes are paler. The neck hair tufts are reddish, except for the subspecies from the northern part of Kalimantan (=Borneo) Is., in which individual variation – yellow, brown, red, black – are apparent. Red tufts on lateral thorax are few or absent. Abdomen is bright yellow with a cream-colored median sex-brand on upper side.
♀: It resembles the wing shape of ♂ but is more rounded. The ground color of FW is blackish brown or brown with grayish white or grayish yellow vein-stripes of the same type as in ♂. HW has large dark discal spots that fuse together to form a band that extends inwards and outwards, shrinking the yellow area. The neck hair tufts are reddish but is variable in Kalimantan Is. as in ♂. Red tufts on lateral thorax are few or absent. Abdomen is grayish brown or yellowish brown.
