(Distribution) [Map 76]
INDONESIA [Aceh] Banyak Islands (Tuangku Is.)
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
A new subspecies astrea described by Hayami in 1992 with 16 ♂♂, 10 ♀♀collected in May 1997 and 10♂♂, 7♀♀collected in November of the same year at Banyak Island, just south of Simeulue Island. This subspecific name astrea means “Goddess of Justice”.
(Characteristics)
The FW of males of the insular subspecies in Indian Ocean west of Sumatra Is. are characterized by minute FW vein-stripes, except in as mentioned above ssp. simeuluensis.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: The vein-stripes on FW are thin and uniform in width and are pale gray in color. Both vein-stripes along V4th do not reach the cell or only slightly reach it, so many individuals do not form a V-shape in space 4. On the HW, the black marginal projections are smaller than ssp. simeuluensis and ssp. niasicus.
♀: Lower stripe of V4th on FW does not reach the cell and rather thin and pale. It is distinguishable from the proximate ssp. simeuluensis by extension of the dark discal spots in spaces 2 – 3 toward the cell of HW.
