INDONESIA [Riau Is.] Northern Natuna Islands (Natuna Besar (=Bunguran) Is.), Southern Natuna Islands (Subi Besar Is., Serasan Is.).

(Episodes of discovery and original description)

One of a series of Troides collected by T. Toeante in 1981 in Natuna Islands (the other being T. helena bunguranensis), described by Parrott & Schmid as a new subspecies in 1984 based on 10♂♂, 4♀♀. The subspecies name chrysomelas means “gold & black”.

(Characteristics)

This subspecies is restricted to the North and South Natuna Islands.

(Spotted pattern)

♂: Vein-stripes on FW not forming V-shape in space 4. The yellow color of the cell-spot and vein-stripes turn gray toward the outer margin and the vein-stripes extend to outer margin more than in related approximate ssp. kuris and ssp. perintis. Black marginal projections on HW are of medium sized and nearly equal to those of ssp. perintis.

♀: The ground color of the wings is lighter brown than the approximate ssp. kuris and ssp.  perintis, and the color of spots is also lighter than of both subspecies. The dark discal spots of HW, especially spaces 2 and 3, are shorter and do not so much extend toward the cell.
