(Episodes of discovery and original description)
Dr. Jordan (1909), in Seitz (ed. Grosse-Schmetterlinge), stated that the Sumatra species was not different from the Malay subspecies ruficollis. In contrast, Fruhstorfer described a new subspecies based on 6♂♂, 7♀♀ from west Sumatra and 5♀♀ from northeast Sumatra in 1913. The subspecific name may be Euthydemus, one of Platon’s early dialogues (384 BC).
(Characteristics)
The subspecies of the Sumatran lineage generally have narrower FW vein-stripes. Black projections on HW in ♂♂ are large in insular subspecies, but small in this mainland subspecies. In ♀♀, the dark discal spots are large and fused together.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: Not obvious different from ssp. astrea from Banyak Islands, as vein-stripes along V4th on FW does not reach the cell, but black marginal projections on HW are slightly smaller.
♀: Wing ground color dark, with distinct vein-stripes on FW. The vein-stripe bordering the lower side of V4th on FW does not reach the cell. The dark discal spots in spaces 2 and 3 on HW not elongate as much towards the cell side and there are no brown scales in these spaces.
