- Ssp. niasicus (Fruhstorfer, 1897)9) [♂, ♀]
(Distribution) [Map 77]
INDONESIA [N. Sumatra] Nias Is.
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
Fruhstorfer (1897) described it as subspecies niasicus (after Nias Island) on the basis of 1 ♂ and 3 ♀♀ specimens from Nias Island. The ♂ has a wider black outer margin band on the hind wings and a somewhat darker yellow forewing vein stripe than in Sumatra and Borneo. The ♀ has a smaller hindwing outer margin spot and a darker upper abdominal coloration. Unfortunately, the date and place of collection are not given.
(Characteristics)
The vein-stripes of male FW are the most indistinct among the insular subspecies of the Sumatran lineage.
(Patterns)
♂: Vein-stripes on FW are more indistinct than the two subspecies mentioned above. The outer margin of HW is somewhat convex and the black marginal border is broad, and black marginal projections are about the same size as those of ssp. simeuluensis but larger than ssp. astrea.
♀: FW vein-stripes are indistinct, especially the cell-spot are short and forms a M-shape. The lower vein-stripe along V4th does not reach the cell. The yellow discal area on HW is somewhat smaller due to the enlargement of dark discal spots, with scattered brown scales in the spaces 2 and 3. As a result, the entire area is dark.
