(Episodes of discovery and original description)
Both andromache and marapokensis were discovered by Waterstradt. The former was collected on Mt. Kinabalu with 1 ♂ and 5 ♀♀ (1♂ and 2 ♀♀ fresh specimens) and was described as a new species by Staudinger (1892). Later, he (1895) described the newly collected specimens again, with ♂ and ♀ illustrations. On the other hand, a large number of specimens of marapokensis were collected at Mount Merapok (northern Sarawak), and Fruhstorfer (1898) described it as a new subspecies on the basis of the absence of a small spot at the tip of the cell on the underside of the forewing of ♂ and the brown ground color and a large, distinct band from the lower cell outward on the forewing of ♀.
The species name andromache is derived from the name of Hector’s famous wife, daughter of King Eetion (Greek mythology).
(Characteristics)
The most northern subspecies. FW of ♀ is grayish white, but individuals tend to be a darker shade of brown as they migrate south (syn. n. marapokensis ).
(Spotted pattern)
♂: smaller than ssp. nishikawai, with somewhat smaller black marginal projections.
♀: The ground color of FW is grayish white in the north near Mt. Kinabalu but becomes darker brown in the south around Merapok. There is no change in pattern on HW.
(Variation)
♂-f. pseudomiranda Haugum & Low, 19833): [Aberrant FW Pattern] Distinctive yellowish white vein-stripes are present on FW upper side the same as in Troides miranda.
♂-f. pseudotrogonoptera Deslisle, 20041): [ Aberrant FW pattern] Sparse iridescent green scales forming a toothed shape particular to genus Trogonoptera present on FW upperside.
♀-f. andromache (Staudinger, 1892)7): [ FW discoloration] The most northerly distributed population, with a white ground color and very light brown patches.
♀-f. marapokensis Fruhstorfer, 18982): [FW discoloration] The further south the distribution, the darker the wing color becomes. This form is the intermediate form between nominotypical ssp. and ssp. nishikawai f. loc. goramensis.
