(Episodes of discovery and original description)
It was Pendlebury (1936) who discovered this subspecies and described it as a new subspecies. The collection locality was Bukit Kutu, Selangor, Malaysia (3400 feet), where the ♂ (holotype) was collected in August 1915 and the ♀ on March 16, 1931. He notes that in describing the species, he sent a specimen of ♂ to Dr. Jordan for his opinion as to its value as a subspecies, and that he agreed. The subspecies is named after Malay Peninsula.
(Characteristics)
The largest of this subspecies, and absence of black wedged-shaped (=cuneiform) spots on wings spaces of HW of ♂, the small dark discal spots on HW of ♀, moreover, the large number of red hair tufts on the lateral thorax suggest a different species.
(Spotted patterns)
♂: Vein-stripes on FW are the finest of the subspecies. The black wedge-shaped (=cuneiform) spots appearing on wing spaces of HW in this species are absent, and black marginal projections are minimal. Abdomen is the brightest ochre of the subspecies, with two round blackish brown spots. Red hair tufts on lateral thorax abundant.
♀: Vein-stripes on FW are dark gray with a small amount of yellow on submarginal area. The dark discal spots on HW are small and heart-shaped, often isolated from each other, therefore yellow patch is more conspicuous. On the subcostal space, there is a triangular yellow spot not seen in other subspecies. Red hair tufts on lateral thorax abundant.
