(Episodes of discovery and original description)

The first description was given by Fruhstorfer (1903). The description was based on a rather old ♂ specimen collected in the mountains of East Sumatra. This specimen was sent together with specimens of other butterflies (O. amphrysus sumatrensis, Prioneris hypsipyle, etc.), but it was assigned to a different subspecies because the upper surface of the abdomen is darker than that of the original subspecies and the wing vein stripes on the forewing are slightly dark yellow and extend to the posterior margin. It was assigned to the new subspecies neomiranda (new miranda).

In the same year (1903), based on a ♂ specimen from Sumatra (northeastern Deli area) purchased from specimen dealer Carl Zacher, Suffert also pointed out 13 differences from the original subspecies and described it as an independent species Zacheri, but Fruhstorfer had already reported it a little earlier.

(Characteristics)

It occurs from lowland to highland (about 2,000m), but it more of a highland subspecies. The fewer populations occurring. The largest of the subspecies and both sexes are melanic.

(Spotted patterns)

♂: Wing ground color black, without dark-blue sheen. Vein-stripe of FW dark yellow, present also at the apex of the cell and extending to V1b on submarginal area. The black marginal border of HW is broad, widening further towards the inner marginal side and the tips of black projections are irregularly pointed. The underside is nearly identical to the surface, but FW vein-stripes are larger, pale yellow and distinct. Those from Mt. Dempo tend to have broadly rounded HW and a wider black margin.

♀: The ground color of wings is dark blackish brown. FW vein-stripes are gray to grayish yellow and extend from the subapical region to the inner margin submarginally. The dark discal spots of HW are the smallest of the subspecies, so that the yellow pale band is the largest. In those of Mt. Dempo, dark discal spots on HW are reduced in size and a yellow apical cell spot is small.
