(Episodes of discovery and original description)
Fruhstorfer (1903) named it “critonides,” meaning “another subspecies similar to criton,” based on 5♂♂2♀♀(?) collected on Obi Island.
(Characteristics)
Somewhat smaller than nominotypical subspecies and female variation is less than the nominotypical subspecies.
(Spotted patterns)
♂: no difference from the nominotypical subspecies in pattern.
♀: The following three forms are currently known. HW pale band is small due to the large dark discal spots.
♀-f. critonides (Fruhstorfer, 1903)2) (=melas (Jordan, 1908)5)): FW dark, HW yellow. (similar ♂)
♀-f. cinna Fruhstorfer, 19083): FW light, HW yellow.
♀-f. clara (Jordan, 1908)5): FW light, HW cream.
(Variation)
♂-f. hypactis (Niepelt, 1927)7): [Aberrant FW pattern] On FW underside, blue-white vein-stripes are present.
