(Episodes of discovery and original description)
The specimen described by Oberthür (1879) as a variation of T. haliphron is a female. On the other hand, the male was first described by Röber (1885). He obtained male and female specimens collected by Ribbe on Selayar Island in July 1882 and described it as ssp. Bauermanni. The subspecific name, pallens, is Latin for “pale”, probably derived from the color of the female wings and abdomen.
(Characteristics)
This subspecies has larger semi-translucent golden patches on HW of ♂ and the ground color of wings of ♀ is paler than those of the nominotypical ssp. from S. Sulawesi, so resembles the following ssp. pistor from Tanahjampea Island and so on, which are located to the south.
(Spotted patterns)
♂: The semi-translucent golden patches on HW are larger than the nominotypical subspecies, because it is composed of five discal spots from subcostal space to space 3 and a half spot of the cell-apex.
♀: The ground color of wings is paler than the nominotypical subspecies. FW is pale brown, and vein-stripes are somewhat broader. Spotted Pattern of HW resembles those of the nominotypical subspecies, but the coloration of underside is milky white. The thorax and upper surface of the abdomen is paler.
