(Episodes of discovery and original description)
It was described as a new species by Röber (1888) on the basis of ♂♀ collected by Kühn and Jacobsen on the island of Luang. The original description of subspecies iris was given in the same paper. The name “staudingeri” is a dedication to Otto Staudinger (1830-1900), a famous German entomologist.
(Characteristics)
If this subspecies, ssp. heptanonius and ssp. ikarus are combined, this subspecies will be the representative subspecies.
(Spotted pattern)
Both sexes closely resemble ssp. heptanonius and ssp. ikarus.
