(Episodes of discovery and original description)
Dr. Martin (1892) described it as an independent species on the basis of two ♀♀ specimens collected in the Battak Mountains of Sumatra. In his description, he stated that a ♂ specimen would soon be published. True to his prediction, in January of the following year (1893), he published a description of ♂, based on 6 ♀♀ and 1 ♂♀ collected at the Karo-Battak mountain range in the same year. At the end of the paper, he wrote: “The species is named after my respected friend Eduard G. Honrath in Berlin”.
(Characteristics)
A large subspecies of Haliphron-Species-Group, the most westerly distributed. Both sexes are much larger than the nominotypical subspecies, and moreover blackened, especially the abdomen, which is entirely glossy black and covered fine black hairs.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: There is no fluorescent-like sheen on the semi-translucent golden patch of HW as in the nominotypical subspecies. The golden spot on the cell is not oval like the nominotypical ssp., but pointed upper inner side. Abdomen is entirely black with luxuriant black fine hairs.
♀: The ground color of FW is dark blackish brown. Grayish white vein-stripes are generally thin and apical patch of the cell is M-shaped. The yellow patch of HW is darker and the black discal spots are larger and fused together. Abdomen is entirely black.
