(Episodes of discovery and original description)
The first discoverer of this species from the Kangean Islands was Prillwitz. He collected one ♂ and one ♀ at that time. Based on the specimens, Rothschild (1908) named and described a new subspecies, antileuca. Other subspecies, mopa, isara, typhaon, and spilotia, were also described in that paper.
(Characteristics)
Resemble the nominotypical subspecies, but little individual variation. Only Dark form is known in female.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: FW glossy black without vein-stripes. The golden spot on the subcostal space is absent, but there is often a large black discal spot in space 6.
♀: Dark form: FW blackish brown without vein-stripes. There is no subcostal yellow patch as in ♂, and only two small yellow patches exist on inner or outer sides of space 6. The size of dark discal spots varies among individuals, but the pale band is a beautiful yellow.
