E. MALAYSIA (Kalimantan=Borneo) [Sabah] Banggi Is., Mt. Kinabalu, Poring, Ranau, Crocker Range (Keningau), Labuk River basin, Sandakan, Sebatik Is.; BRUNEI.
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
The Bornean species was described by Rothschild (1895) and Jordan (1908), who both considered it to be the same subspecies as cerberus. It was Fruhstorfer (1913) who first described it as a new subspecies. In his paper, he stated “Specimens from Malay Peninsula (cerberus) are much closer to Bornean subspecies (mosychlus) than typhaon, but the yellowish tinge characteristic of mosychlus does not appear.”
(Characteristics)
Above four subspecies of Kalimantan (=Borneo)-group have pointed apices of FW and HW, and angular shape wings, whereas this subspecies is smaller and has rounded apices of wings. The spotted pattern is more stable and less variable. Easy to distinguish from other subspecies.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: Even on FW surface, pale vein-stripes appear on the submarginal area. On the HW, the semi-translucent golden spot in the subcostal space is wide. The black marginal border is narrow, and the black projections are small.
♀: Intermediate form: FW dark brown. Vein-stripes grayish white with ochre, present on all veins, but are somewhat indistinct, and ones of V1b – V2nd or V3rd do not reach the cell. The cell-spot forms an M-shape. On the subcostal space of HW, a small spot is present on the side of the cell along V7, or in some individuals it is absent. Dark discal spots are small, isolated, and only in contact with the dark projections in spaces 2 – 4.
