(Distribution) [Map 128]
INDONESIA [E. Java] Bawean Is. (Isolated island in the Java Sea about 100 Km north between Kalimantan (=Borneo) Is. and Java Is.)
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
The description written by Fruhstorfer (1906), entitled “Reisebericht über eine Sammeltour auf der Insel Bawean” (= Report on a collecting trip to Bawean Island), contains only a figure of the holotype (♀). He collected 2♂♂ and 3♀♀ on the same island. The subspecies name nereides is a reference to Nereid(e), the daughter of Nereus, the 50 sea nymphs (Greek mythology).
(Characteristics)
Black discal spots on HW of ♂ appear more frequently. Females are known only in Light form and the yellow spots of HW are characteristically dirty grayish-yellow color.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: Black discal spots appear on almost all individuals from space 2 to space 6 on HW.
♀: Light form: FW vein-stripes are even broader than in ssp. nereis and ssp. rayae, but the border with the ground color is indistinct. On the HW, the spot on the subcostal space is absent and the yellow spot of space 6 is also small. Dark discal spots are large and fused with each other, resulting to form the broad band, so pale band is significantly small and distinctive stained dirty grayish yellow.
