INDONESIA (Kalimantan=Borneo) [W. Kalimantan] Singkawang, Anjungan (near Pontianak), [S. Kalimantan] Kalimantan Selatan area, Laut Kecil Islands (Matasiri Is.), [E. Kalimantan] Melak, Bontang, Samarinda.

(Episodes of discovery and original description)

This subspecies was described by Parrott in 1991 based on a pair collected in East Kalimantan (Bontang) in 1988 and a female collected in South Kalimantan in 1983. The subspecific name orientis means “east”.

(Characteristics)

Resembles ssp. sugimotoi from Karimata Is. and ssp. venus from Southern Natuna Islands, but somewhat larger.

(Spotted pattern)

♂: FW black without vein-stripes, but the underside has pale gray vein-stripes along V^2nd – V^6th as in the two subspecies mentioned above, and in some individuals, they are completely absent. The semi-translucent golden spot on the subcostal space of HW resembles those of ssp. venus, extending along V^8th and depressing the outer margin. The width of the black marginal border is about the same as in ssp. sugimotoi and black projections are not as high as ssp. venus.

♀: Intermediate form: The ground color of FW is dark brown, not blackish brown as in ssp. sugimotoi. Vein-stripes are indistinct and, as well as the above two subspecies, do not reach the cell in V^1b – V^4th. The subcostal space of HW may be unmarked or have only a small spot submarginally. The dark discal spots are often small and isolated.
