(Episodes of discovery and original description)
The subspecies described by Fruhstorfer in 1896 based on specimens of males and females collected on Lombok Island (date and number of collection not given). In his commentary on ♀, he states “♂ like♀of sagittatus are characterized by an unusually penetrating aroma, somewhat reminiscent of the scent of reseda”. The subspecific name sagittatus means “sagittate”.
(Characteristics)
Closely resembles the adjacent ssp. propinquus from Sumbawa Is., therefore, they are sometimes treated as the same subspecies.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: The semi-translucent golden spot on the subcostal space varies from appearing to being absent, as in ssp. cerberus.
♀: Two forms. On the HW, the subcostal space is not spotted, and dark discal spots are isolated or in contact with each other, but not so large.
- Dark form (♀-f. sciara (Jordan, 1908)18)): FW without vein-stripes.
- Light form (♀-f. sagittatus (Fruhstorfer, 1896)9)) (=nympha (Jordan, 1908)18): FW with grayish white vein-stripes.
