(Distribution) [Map 134]
INDONESIA [W. Kalimantan] Karimata Island (Karimata Is).
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
Subspecies described by Hanafusa in 1992 on 5 ♂♂ and 4 ♀♀ collected in March and April 1989 on Karimata Island, southern Borneo. The subspecies is named after Mr. Shiro Sugimoto, who was the first to report the butterfly from Karimata Island.
(Characteristics)
Closely resembles the previously described ssp. bunguranensis from North Natuna Islands, ssp. venus from South Natuna Islands, and also similar to ssp. orientis from Southern Kalimantan (=Borneo) Is. The spotted pattern is stable, and no special variation is known.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: FW is glossy black without vein-stripes and white marginal spots are also small. The black marginal border and projections on HW are broader, especially in spaces 3 and 4. The semi-translucent golden spot on the subcostal space is considerably stable, and it is almost the same width, with the straight anterior edge and the depressed outer margin.
♀: Intermediate form: FW blackish brown instead of dark brown. The color of vein-stripes is not light brown but light gray, not reaching the cell in V1b – V4th. The subcostal space is completely devoid of the spot. Dark discal spots are only in contact with each other but are fused with dark projections in spaces 2 -4.
