(Episodes of discovery and original description)
This subspecies was one of a series of new subspecies described by Rothschild (1908), including subspecies neoris, mopa, antileuca, isara, and spilotia of T. helena. The specimens used for the description are 6♂♂7♀♀ collected in Northeast Sumatra, and the holotype is a ♀ specimen collected by Dr. Martin in the lowlands of Northeast Sumatra.
(Characteristics)
Many reports of collection from mainly lowlands in the northern part of Sumatra Island. Since it closely resembles ssp. cerberus, it seems to be the most closely related.
♂: The FW have acute apex, with a slightly concave outer margin. The grayish-white vein-stripes on the underside are well developed. Many individuals have large black projections on HW.
♀: There are two forms. The dark discal spots on HW are small and isolated. The pale band on underside is slightly paler.
- Dark form (♀-f. aplotia (Jordan, 1908)18)): FW vein-stripes are few or absent.
- Light form (♀-f. typhaon (Rothschild, 1908)30)) (=phycia (Jordan, 1908) 18)): FW vein-stripes clearly present.
(Variation)
♀-f. sinepuncta Rumbucher & Schäffler, 200532): [Aberrant HW pattern] HW resembles that of ♂, the black discal spots are missing.
