- Ssp. hanno Fruhstorfer, 190411) [♂] [♀: lucina (Jordan, 1908)16)] (♀: 2 forms)
(Distribution) [Map 142]
INDONESIA [Maluku] Gorong (=Goram) Islands (Gorong (=Goram) Is.)., Watubela Islands (Kasiui Is., Tioor Is.), Tayandu Islands (Kur Is.).
(Episodes of discovery and original description)
This subspecies was described by Fruhstorfer (1904) based on 12♂♂ collected in the Goram Islands. Unfortunately, no ♀ was collected at that time, but a light-color type was already collected by Kühn at Goram Laut on February 26, 1900, and a dark-color type on February 28, 1900, both of which were described by Jordan (1908). Rothschild also described the subspecies asartia four years after Fruhstorfer’s publication, based on 3♂♂ collected by Kühn in December 1899. The origin of the subspecies name “hanno” is unknown, but it may be a reference to Hanno, a Carthaginian general who sailed along the west coast of Africa around 500 BC.
(Characteristics)
A little-known subspecies resembles the nominotypical subspecies, but smaller. The ♀ was unknown in the original description and was subsequently described by Jordan (1908)16).
(Spotted pattern)
♂: Of the semi-translucent golden patch on HW, the spot of subcostal space resembles those of the nominotypical ssp., but somewhat smaller. Many individuals lack the finger-like projection along V6th in space 5 that is characteristic of this species, as in ssp. bandensis.
♀: As with other subspecies, there are two forms. The pale-band of HW resembles those of nominotypical subspecies and the color is milky gray with slight orange tinge.
- Dark form (♀-f. lucina (Jordan, 1908)16)): Vein-stripes on FW indistinct or absent.
- Light form (♀-f. diana (Jordan, 1908)16)): FW with grayish-white vein-stripes.
