When learning about birdwing butterflies, one is initially attracted only to the beauty of the male, but as one’s understanding progresses, one becomes fascinated by the diversity of variation in the female. Among the subspecies regis, in which the female’s spots are reduced and blackened, this specimen is particularly outstanding. It is named ♀-f. nocturnus by Deslisle & Sclavo (2015). It recalls the nocturnes of Frédéric Chopin. (Yasui)
