Supplement 1 from Yasui collection
The most fascinating thing about the subspecies miokensis is its coloration: the continuous change from the main island of New Guinea (subspecies poseidon: yellowish green) to the island of New Britain (subspecies bornemanni: bluish green) to the Duke of York Islands (subspecies miokensis: blue-green) to the island of New Ireland (subspecies urvillianus: blue) is an example of gradual evolution. The intermediate color miokensis is the connecting link in the evolutionary process, but most individuals are blue with only a slight greenish tinge. Yasui won this perfect miokensis at an auction in Japan in January 2009, after a fierce bidding war, as he felt that the evidence of evolution should not be missed. This mysterious coloration, which is neither green nor blue, is probably not found in more than one in a hundred. Because it is a superb specimen not found even in the Ohya collection, I am presenting it here as supplementary information. (Yasui)
