033-00333

Although it does not seem to have a special form name, it is a very unique individual that looks like an owl’s eye. Such great diversity of variation is the charm of female Birdwing butterflies. Even patterns produced by random (purposeless) mutations become symmetrical through developmental mechanisms, so that they appear to the human eye at first glance to have a meaningful pattern. This is due in part to the human cognitive characteristic of recognizing two round dots in a row as a “face and eyes”. (Yasui)
