This is an extremely valuable specimen that forms the centerpiece of the Oya collection. Since 1980, when Japan joined CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), it has been impossible to import or privately own specimens of this species, and new specimens does not exist anywhere in Japan. Specimens held in museums are inevitably exposed to light, which deteriorates them because they are used for exhibits in the public interest. This specimen has never been exposed to the sun and retains its fresh beauty immediately after emergence. Moreover, this specimen was emerged from its pupa by Mr. Ray Straatman, a famous ornithopterist, for research purposes, and Mr. Shinji Nagai, who was visiting New Guinea in 1970, obtained it from him. When Mr. Stratmann came to Japan in June 1983, he was delighted to see it safely stored in the Oya Collection. Please take a look at the mysterious color, which is neither blue nor green, around the forewing cell. This is the true color of O. alexandrae. Agrias and Morpho are no comparison.
