Linnaeus assumed the fictitious species Papilio panthous, with the female of T. hypolitus as its male and the female of O. priamus priamus as its female; I wonder if he did not check the abdomen of the female of T. hypolitus. This is a major error in the history of Birdwing butterfly nomenclature. However, when compared with the female of O. p. priamus, the spot pattern on the hind wings is somewhat similar, and Linnaeus’s imagination might have been outstanding for his time in deciding that the yellow one was male and the dark brown one was female.
