The specimen (1♂) used for the original description by Wallace (1855) was collected near the Rejang River in the northeastern coastal region of Borneo and was brought by Rajah Brooke. James Brooke was a young Englishman who was a Rajah in recognition of his dedication to the people of Sarawak. The species name “brookiana” is dedicated to him, who was a good friend and advisor to Wallace.
(Characteristics)
This is the nominotypical subspecies distributed in the northern area of Kalimantan (=Borneo) Is. and is lighter spotted than the next subspecies haugumei from the south area of the same Island.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: Difficult to distinguish from other subspecies. The green patch of HW extend slightly to subcostal space, but a variation in which the black outer marginal band intrudes into the green patch (spaces 3 – 5) is observed. This is a feature not seen in other subspecies. There is no white spot on the apex of subcostal space on HW.
♀: Small, about the same size as ♂. The patch-pattern shows intermediate between those of ssp. albescens and ssp. trogon. The white subapical streaks of FW are quite distinct, but not a pronounced as ssp. albescens.
(Variation)
♂-f. futurus (Krüger, 1925)7): [Aberrant HW pattern] Melanic form of HW. The black outer marginal border intrudes widely into the green patch of HW and covers almost 1/3 of the cell in middle area.
