(Episodes of discovery and original description)
The species from the Lingga Island was first discovered by van Hasselt in 1895. Specimens collected by Cardinal on Singkep Island in 1955 and 1956 (6♂♂4♀♀♀) are preserved in the Dutch National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, and were classified as other subspecies, especially as trogon. However, Haugum and Low described it as a new subspecies in 1982 on the basis of 7♂♂ and 8♀♀, including 1♂ and 1♀ from their collection and 2♀♀ from the collection of Nieuwenhuis.
(Characteristics)
As small as ssp. jikoi. Wing shape is rounded and somewhat stocky. However, patch-pattern have much in common with those of ssp. trogon from Sumatra in the west and nominotypical ssp. from Kalimantan (=Borneo) Is. in the east.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: The green wedge-shaped patches on FW are short, and the two of them, on the inner margin, are fused together. The white spot on the apex of HW is present as in ssp. albescens.
♀: It is characterized that the center area of the wedge-shaped patch on inner margin of FW is covered with black scales. A white spot on the apex of HW is large, but shorter and slightly smaller than nominotypical subspecies. Submarginal white sagittal-shaped spots on HW are distinct. On undersurface, white spots on FW and HW are well developed.
