(Episodes of discovery and original description)
The first description of this subspecies was given by Rothschild (1895) based on 1 ♂ and 1 ♀, which he summarized as the original subspecies. However, he described the ♀ as “just intermediate between the typical form and T. brookiana albescens, having the white markings of the underside larger than they are in brookianus, and smaller in albescens.”. He (1908) later redescribed it as a new subspecies based on a ♀ collected at Bunguran, Natuna Islands, in January 1908.
(Characteristics)
A very little-known subspecies. It is relatively large, comparable to ssp. albescens, and is characterized by spreading blue spots, and bright red hair tufts on the neck.
(Spotted pattern)
♂: It can be distinguished from other subspecies by that the green wedge-shaped patches are not so acute marginally and rounded, and does not reach the outer margin, except for the one along V1b, moreover that the white spot on the subcostal space and a blue spot at the base of green patch are large, on HW.
♀: The White streaks and spots on FW extend from the apex to submarginal area, but smaller on the apex than in ssp. albescens. The green patch on HW is blue on the 2/3 of the wing basally, and submarginal white sagittal-shaped spots are distinct. On underside of FW and HW, the white patches and spots are completely arranged and large.
