The 2026 JICA Training Program for Japanese Descendants (October 15 – 31) began its Kagawa University portion with an official welcome at the Global Café on the Saiwai Campus. The trainees, Ms. Hiroka Kondoh of the JICA Shikoku Center, and Ms. Naomi Tarumi, JICA Program Coordinator, were welcomed by Assoc. Prof. Takamizu, Director of the International Student Center, and Prof. Lutes, Chair of the International Exchange Committee, Faculty of Agriculture. Assoc. Prof. Takamizu and Prof. Lutes are the program’s organizers and leaders.
The program, “Development of a New, Small Food Business,” is hosted by the Faculty of Agriculture and the International Office of Kagawa University and supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as part of its Training Program for Japanese Descendants. The program gives people of Japanese descent the opportunity to visit Japan, acquire practical techniques and knowledge, and apply them to the social, technical, and scientific development of their home countries.
This year, six trainees from Brazil are taking part. After beginning the program at the JICA Yokohama Center, they will spend 12 days (October 19 – 30) at Kagawa University’s Saiwai and Agriculture Campuses. During their stay, they will focus on how to establish and run a successful food business in their home country by adapting Japanese food, culture, and know-how. They will study food science, business planning, and presentation techniques, explore the role of fusion cuisine in a globalized world, and try udon noodle making. They will also have opportunities to learn from owners of successful local businesses, observe restaurant management in practice, and discuss business models and professional skills.
At the end of the training, the trainees will present their own business plans based on what they have learned and experienced during the program.
