The 3rd Kagawa University • Hanoi University of Science and Technology International Internship took place during the summer of 2024 at the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences (SCLS) at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Hanoi, Vietnam. This year’s program ran from August 26, 2024, to September 27, 2024, and included a unique blend of academic learning, cultural immersion, and international collaboration. With a duration of 32 days, the program offered students a comprehensive experience designed to enhance their understanding of biotechnology, food science, and agricultural studies.

Ten students from the Faculty of Agriculture, including second, third, and fourth-year participants, engaged in a variety of activities throughout the internship. The core elements of the program involved laboratory training and classes related to food, agriculture, and biotechnology, all conducted in English. Students also had the opportunity to visit local sites in Vietnam, gaining deeper insight into Vietnamese culture and language. A highlight of the program was the chance to collaborate and study alongside Vietnamese students, fostering a rich exchange of knowledge and perspectives.

In addition to the primary activities at HUST, this year’s internship included special visits to Chiang Mai University (CMU) in Thailand, where students attended the 3rd Trilateral Symposium (CMU-KU-NCYU), and Assumption University of Thailand in Bangkok, where they participated in laboratory experience and training sessions. These visits added further value to the internship by offering students exposure to international academic environments and research practices.

The program was implemented under the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Short-Term Program for the Training of Food and Agriculture Specialists for Globalization. Two-thirds of the students were awarded scholarships from JASSO to support their participation. The program also benefited from the support of the Supporters’ Association of the Faculty of Agriculture at Kagawa University.

Throughout the internship, daily wrap-up sessions and discussions were conducted in English to reinforce learning and ensure students had a clear understanding of each day’s activities. The faculty members in charge of the program, Prof. P. Lutes, Assistant Prof. T. Ishii, and Assistant Prof. Y. Hara, accompanied the students during the entire trip, ensuring their safety and academic guidance. This immersive and structured program allowed students to gain valuable skills, both academically and culturally, preparing them for future roles as specialists in food and agriculture in a global context.
